The MacTeX-2008 package can be obtained over the internet for free by clicking on the following link:

MacTeX.mpkg.zip [ approximately 1.18 GB ]
This link points to a "multiplexer" site which parcels out requests to various up-to-date CTAN mirrors. Occasionally users have trouble getting the package from this multiplexer. In that case, choose a specific mirror on this mirror page.

If you have a BitTorrent to get MacTeX-2008. client, you can also use BitTorrent. The required URL is

Was the download successful?

There is an easy way to check that your download was successful. Run Apple's Terminal application in /Applications/Utilities. After the prompt, type the command
openssl md5
and then drag and drop the file MacTeX.mpkg.zip to the Terminal window to complete the command. Push Return. The Mac will compute an "md5 checksum". This sum should be: 6746e7e663c1e063d08288101465a829. The sum for the BitTorrent copy will be different: 19535ec3917efcf2076f9f65b771b4bd.

Some browsers will automatically unzip the file and produce a package named MacTeX-2008.mpkg with Apple's familiar icon. Other browers will produce a zip file; double click this file to unzip and produce the package. Then double click MacTeX-2008.mpkg and follow the simple instructions to install. After installation, go to /Applications/TeX and read the short document "READ ME FIRST." Follow the instructions in this document, and you'll be using TeX within a few minutes.
